My question is, where on earth are all of you coming from? It hasn't even been a full day yet and already there are almost 7,000 views on this page. So, to the next one who comes through, is this showing up for some common Google search? I'm stymied. :)
  • Jeff · 2 years ago
Cool! Would be awesome to see something like this in the states!

There's a cool little plugin that i'm sure a lot of people who viewed this page use. It's called stumble, takes you to really odd sites based off your interests and what not.
  • TomTom · 2 years ago
This page was submitted to stumble upon by a user called Xagreus and it received a few thumbs up so its in common rotation. I too get you a thumbs up so prepare for even more traffic.

Causing fruits and/or vegetables take the shape of a predefined form is not new;but making it feasible on a commercial scale is new to me.The Japanese are renown for their ability to work in miniature. One only need look at the art of bonsai. The melons are a great idea.
  • Coldhak · 2 years ago
"My question is, where on earth are all of you coming from?"
    i found it via stumbleupon(http://www.stumbleupon.com)

square melons. awesome. maybe we can make stackable grapes?
  • Max · 2 years ago
what's wierd about all this traffic is that this is not new... japanese have been doing this for a while
  • Sue · 2 years ago
Interesting stuff. My son proved this could done with potatoes as a school experiment 10 years ago. At the time he wanted to show that square potatoes could be an efficient way to produce french fries/potato chips. His experiment then was successful: a very simple technique
  • Alias · 2 years ago
They cost about 140$ a pop though.
  • John · 2 years ago
Not exactly new... they mentioned this on the Simpsons years ago (and if that's anything to go by - don't buy one, as they soon pop back into roundness, making you drop them on the pavement)
  • Hutch · 2 years ago

But how does it affect the fruit to rind ratio? Do you end up with a small sphere of edible fruit in the middle or does the rind stay a consistent width causing the fruit inside to be cubicle as well?
  • globeadue · 2 years ago
Stumbled here myself and gave it the thumbs up
  • Ror · 2 years ago
Stumble here too. Wonder if they charge more for the cuboid shape?

Let's just call it quits, a'ight?
  • Ann · 2 years ago
    Ben,

Wow. Quite the number of comments. I was actually a little disappointed to find out they grow the watermelons in jars. My sister-in-law does plant genetics and one of the recent projects at her company is genetically breeding square tomatoes. They're also trying to breed tomatoes with fewer guts. Unfortunately, the first crop came out the texture of potatoes...
  • Tom · 2 years ago
This is nothing new. They've been doing this a long time, and they're very expensive.
  • helmet · 2 years ago
i m wondering how u can do that???
  • helmet · 2 years ago
    toby u're too stupid.
i m wondering how u can do that???

Another stumbler here. :) I wonder if they taste as good as normal watermelons.
  • Bob in Atlanta · 2 years ago
The Japanese are utilizing it, but people have been using shaped fruit here for decades, Just not much market for it. A French brandy has a pear in the bottle. They place the bottle in a tree and insert the branch into IT before the fruit grows. Clever bunnies!
  • .mb. · 2 years ago

Please don't take this the wrong way--square watermelons are quite interesting. But 1400 hits? I wish my literary blog would get those kinds of hits, but then it demands more attention than a watermelon.

  • Jeena · 2 years ago
Those guys are cool: people think those fruits are just a weird game but the truth is cubic fruits can be easilier stocked and transported. Cubic = money.

Stumbled her, I like the storability of the Square Melon. Hope the Plastic surgeons in the US don't get any ideas!
  • Cat Tricky-tricky-wicky! · 2 years ago
I found out about this from a forwarded email, but it was from StumbleUpon before that. That's...wow. Interesting. For some reason they look like huge green candles to me XD Must be because the stems kind of look like wicks....lol

    Anyway I don't think I'll be paying 80 bucks a pop for a square watermelon, myself. =D

    They are cool though.
  • Vic · 2 years ago
um, to the person that wants to know if we can do this with eggs...only if you can find a way of putting a square bottle up a chicken's bottom before the egg is fully formed

stumbleupon. Dude, once you've got a thumbs up, the page gets many hits.
  • neoauteur · 2 years ago
The Japanese are known for being very resourceful. This is a fine example of that.
  • Gamemaster · 2 years ago
Stumbled here too! I love StumbleUpon!
  • mitch · 2 years ago
Reminds me of genetic modifacation. The Japanese are allways trying to make things more perfect than it iallready is. Like they think that they are the makers of the web of life rather than the thread that we all are.
  • mitch · 2 years ago
Reminds me of G.M.O.s. The Japanese are always trying to make things more perfect than it ialready is. Like they think that they are the makers of the web of life rather than the thread that we all are.
  • Jane · 2 years ago
They are in the States only for about a month they are expansive just like any other kind of food that has been structurally altered. Also yes Stumbleupon is great but watch what sites that it takes you to it doesn't take into acount any virus that may be there so if you don't have some type of firewall set up then your in trouble.
    p.s. happy stumbling ;-)
  • Izabael · 2 years ago
I'll be more impressed if they can make toroidal ones.....
  • Applerin1984 · 2 years ago
    Another stumbler!
  • IndiaStumble · 2 years ago
Imagine trying to do something as simple using Genetics.
Reminds me of a joke from the USA / USSR cold war days - US scientists were trying to invent a pen that worked in space (zero gravity) while, the Russians used a pencil! :-)
  • xy · 2 years ago
Jumping on the bandwagon...I am from stumbleupon too

I reckon they should do this with all sorts of fruits, like oranges etc...it looks awesome!
